The Woodlands is a planned community, comprised of several large villages, located approximately 27 miles north of downtown Houston. The Greater Conroe area is a rare blend of neighborhoods in the forest, in the city, and on the lake. Its gentle rolling hills area covered in pine trees, azaleas and dogwoods. Located northwest of Houston, the two main crossroads, FM 1960 at State Highway 290 and at State Highway 249, are 21 miles from Houston's central business district. Both the Northwest Freeway (U.S. 290) and State Highway 249 form good commuting links with Houston. The Sam Houston Tollway adds excellent access to the south and to the east.
Many stores and services have developed along the major thoroughfares. The Willowbrook Mall has established a strong local commercial focus.
